Igloo Studio: Real-Time Multiplayer Gaming Platform Migration from GCP to AWS

Executive Summary

Igloo Studio, a prominent online video gaming company delivering real-time multiplayer games to a global audience, migrated its entire platform from Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to Amazon Web Services (AWS) to overcome manual scaling limitations, deployment inefficiencies, and fragmented cost visibility. DG Global Technology designed and executed a secure, multi-account AWS Organization spanning four isolated environments — Production, Development, CI/CD, and Management — interconnected via AWS Transit Gateway and provisioned entirely through Terraform Infrastructure as Code. Workloads were rehosted to Amazon EC2 and replatformed to Amazon EKS and Aurora MySQL, with centralized governance through IAM, CloudTrail, CloudWatch, and Firewall Manager. The migration delivered a resilient, automated, and cost-transparent cloud foundation ready for Igloo Studio's next phase of regional growth.

Customer Background

Igloo Studio is a prominent online video gaming company focused on delivering innovative, competitive, and immersive digital gaming experiences to a global audience. Its core business revolves around real-time multiplayer games that are highly interactive and performance-sensitive, catering to both casual and professional gamers. With a rapidly growing user base driven by mobile-first engagement, its portfolio spans mobile games, browser-based games, and downloadable client-based platforms — all requiring robust, low-latency backend infrastructure. The platform previously ran on GCP across four environments using Compute Engine virtual machines, Cloud SQL for MySQL (HA), and Cloud Storage buckets.

Key Stats: Real-time multiplayer gaming workloads across mobile, browser, and client platforms; hosted on GCP (Compute Engine, Cloud SQL HA, Cloud Storage) across four environments; targeting a four-account AWS Organization (Production, Development, CI/CD, Management)

Business Challenge

While Igloo Studio successfully operated its gaming platform on GCP, the company faced critical operational and strategic challenges that hindered its ability to scale, innovate, and maintain a competitive edge — increasingly apparent as user demand for real-time responsiveness, global reach, and system reliability intensified.

Key Challenges:

AWS Solution

DG Global Technology designed a modern, secure, and scalable architecture built around a multi-account AWS Organization. Each environment is isolated with its own Amazon VPC and connected via AWS Transit Gateway for secure, high-speed cross-account communication. All infrastructure provisioning is codified with Terraform, ensuring consistent, version-controlled, repeatable deployments.

AWS Services Utilized

Amazon EC2 & EKS

Compute flexibility for rehosted game logic servers, session and login services, and container orchestration for microservices scalability

Amazon Aurora MySQL

High-performance, fault-tolerant transactional storage for user profiles, game sessions, in-game transactions, and leaderboard management

Amazon S3

Durable, cost-efficient storage for game assets, configuration files, logs, backups, and deployment archives across all environments

AWS Transit Gateway & Route 53

Secure inter-VPC communication across accounts with DNS routing across regions and services, fronted by Application Load Balancers

Migration Tooling

AWS Migration Hub, Application Migration Service (MGN), and Database Migration Service (DMS) for phased, low-disruption migration waves

Governance & Security

AWS IAM, CloudTrail, Amazon CloudWatch, and AWS Firewall Manager for centralized access control, auditing, monitoring, and unified policy enforcement

Business Impact

Migrating to AWS with DG Global Technology transformed how we operate. Manual scaling and hand-run deployments are gone — everything is codified in Terraform, and our four environments finally behave consistently. Our players get the low-latency experience they expect even during launch-day spikes, and for the first time we have real visibility into what each team and application costs us. It's the foundation we needed to grow across the region.
